Tax free swapping

Date July 31, 2009

Okay, it’s been a few weeks since we posted last. Kathie went west. I went east. Both to our motherlands and to our mothers too. We each saw various friends and family. We visited old haunts and shared them with our kiddos. We played and hiked and camped and swam and ate and drank and talked and yes, we each even got to do a little sewing and crafting at our respective childhood homes. I even got to pass on a few sewing lessons to my 20 something nieces, each eager and excited to be learning the craft. Super fun for one and all.

And now we’re both back in Austin, TX. A little weary of the crazy heat, but glad to be home and glad too to be back together gearing up for what’s ahead. Dare I say gearing up for fall? Crazy as that might sound, it’s true.  Perhaps thoughts of fall will keep us here in Austin from fretting about another month or so of 100+ degree days.

Our first big event will be our 2nd annual Back to School Clothes Swap held at our kids’ elementary school held on Texas’ Tax Free Weekend. The principal is even letting us move things into the cafeteria this year which is bigger than the gym and hopefully a wee bit cooler too. It was hot as be-jeepers last year and, well, you can only guess how hot that is. Our volunteers were tireless in their efforts though and the swappers just kept coming.

Here are the details…

  • Saturday August 22
  • 9:30 am – 2 pm
  • Zilker Elementary School 1900 Bluebonnet Lane Austin, TX

We are seeking volunteers to help us sew, silk screen, sort and of course swap. So come one, come all sizes. Bring your cast-offs and dig through the abundant piles of clothes and shoes to get yourself set up for the new season ahead.  It’s not only green but it’s tax free too!

And if you’re not in Austin but you’d like to organize your own Back to School Swap, check out our tutorial here with step by step instructions for organizing your very own.

Would love to see your tutorial as our church has been contemplating starting such a swap – but the link doesn’t have an address associated with it. Can you email me the link? Thanks!!

Do we bring clothes with us to swap? I have two girls and lots of their stuff that does not fit anymore. I would like to swap for clothes that will fit them for the upcoming school year.

Yes, bring stuff if you have it. Come empty handed if you need to. No worries about who brings what because there will be MORE than enough for everyone. MORE than enough.
