Crafting with my kids usually stresses me out. I am horrible about finding space that I don't mind getting messy. I'm trying to do better and be more forgiving with my daughter - who loves to create. I'm learning the pluses of taking things outside and large sheets of plastic to cover whatever. The look on her face when she's made something is just so worth whatever I have to do. I'm not a terribly crafty person so finding ways to foster her amazing creativity is high on my priority list.

I find it difficult to craft with my son. He is not into it the way I am. He would rather play int he yard, most of the time. But maybe this is his age? I don't remember my parents doing crafts with my sister and me. My mom sewed and dad worked with wood in his shop. I don't remember any collaborative family projects. It doesn't come naturally to me, but I think it's important and worth the effort, so I keep offering the choice.

Thanks for prompting me to think about this!

my daughter is 7 months old - so we haven't started crafting yet ;) but I am looking forward to it. i don't mind getting messy...or getting other things messy - so that's not a problem. probably my only concern is my own perfectionism. it's always been a challenge for me when working with children.

thanks for the great giveaway!

Oh the crafting with kids is my FAVORITE.... bring on the materials....bring on the mess. In fact the messier the better. This I think is the one spot I can really let go of the mess and just be....create...make...destroy...play whatever...with whatever. I could really get lost in crafting with kids. No plans....just supplies and see what comes out of it all..... and I think that is the real fun and joy. Ari of course is too little to craft just yet...but he does enjoy playing at my feet while I craft. So I have crafted with many of other people's kids. The real challenge for me is when a kid isn't in to crafting...... and a couple of art classes I taught....where I had no boundaries on glue or glitter.... that got really messy...and ewww the time I let them paint..... it got ALL over the place.... and really I was fine with it... however the school I was working for....the janitors....and a teacher or two...not as happy! But bahhh I say let them make a mess... how often do kids REALLY get to explore a medium....?

The thing I find most challenging is finding something I can do with kids that aren't the same age. I have an almost 7yo and an almost 4yo. It's been hard finding things they both can do. I also sometimes have a hard time giving in to the mess... but I'm better. =)

Ramonsterwear ROCKS! I don't even like baseball, but I am making love to my woman tonight so I can have a baby to wear that great outfit!
Future Craft is just that. A saner vision of where we can be, and profiting with the journey getting there.
Future Craft(ers) understand and rejoice in the fact that at each moment, we are capable of shaping our futures. Keep the word coming. Make love to the world

I have volunteered as an art docent for all my daughters grade school years and I found it very rewarding. I learned as much as they did. Kids are fearless when it comes to art and it is so fun to see what emerges in that safe arena. If there was a down side it might have been me designing a weaving workshop that was a bit over every ones head and I ran out of gas and time before the project could be completed. So realistic expectations are something to consider. LOVE THIS INSPIRATION !

What I like: It gives me a chance to regress back into childhood and unwind from the pressures of being an adult. I get to share 1:1 time with my son, who always manages to show me a new way of looking at or creating art ("Oh, is that a mermaid?" "No, it's Buzz Lightyear.") . I'm creating memories, both tangible and intangible.

What I don't like: His attention span usually fades long before mine and it's hard for me to stop just because he feels like he's done.

Goodness, this might be worth having another kid for... or bonsai-ing Jasper, at any rate!

I was never a kid who played much, being the bookish child of two rather controlling parents, so I try to let my kids have as much fun as possible. No matter how much mess is involved. It definitely goes against my nature but my husband is an artist and he's very good about letting the kids get their hands dirty!
