Consuming Kids

Date June 15, 2009

This weekend I participated in a viewing and panel discussion on the documentary Consuming Kids. It was amazing. And frightening. A documentary I think every parent and educator should watch. The way the modern day marketing machine preys on our kids from birth on is mind boggling. You can read more about my experience here.

There is an organization called Center for Commercial Free Childhood which is helping people organize screenings and they are encouraging this via their website. http://www.commercialexploitation.org/

I think that teaching our kids to create and make their own beauty is a great way to combat the powers of the marketing machine. It is after all, one of the basic tenets that had us start Future Craft Collective in the first place. If a kid knows that happiness, creation, beauty and digging, scraping, scrounging and making all lies within, they will be less likely to fall victim to the talons of the commercial beast.

Thank you so much for posting this. What a valuable resource – I would love to set up a screening in my area. I’ve also signed the petitions they have going on the website.
We send our child to a Waldorf school for many of the reasons articulated in this project, but I still feel inundated all of the time.
